Asylum Harbour

Spring / Summer ’17

ASYLUM HARBOUR EMERGED FROM A CHILDHOOD MEMORY THAT RECENTLY RE-SURFACED WHILE WATCHING THE INFAMOUS 1989 FOOTAGE OF THE FRENCH LIGHTHOUSE ‘LE JUMENT’ WITHSTANDING A VIOLENT STORM IN THE IROISE SEA CAPTURED BY JEAN GUICHARD. THAT EXTRAORDINARY VISUAL BROUGHT BACK THIS ‘MAN VS NATURE’ CONCEPT, WHICH INSTIGATED THE RESEARCH INTO EXTREME OCEANIC TRAGEDIES SUCH AS SHIPWRECKS AND OCEAN STORMS.

THE OCEAN, OFTEN ROMANTICIZED AS NATURE’S SOUL-HEALER, IS ALSO NATURE’S LARGEST GRAVE YARD. ONCE IT UNLEASHES, WE EACH SEEK OUR OWN ASYLUM HARBOUR.
